“Kluscap The Giant”
Every day, I see the Blomidon cliffs in Nova Scotia, Canada. It’s nice to see these beautiful cliffs every day. I really appreciate Blomidon. I feel refreshed after seeing Blomidon whenever I feel good, excited, bad, sad, happy, tired, nervous, tense and so on.
There is a famous legend of a giant called Kluscap (Glooscap) in the Indigenous Mi’kmaq people’s culture. I took a picture of a sign, which is about Kluscap’s legend. I typed and translated into Japanese and created a Kluscap and Nova Scotian paper cutting art. Please enjoy this beautiful story.
『巨人グルースキャップ』
ここカナダのノバスコシア州で、毎日ブロミドンの崖を目にします。この綺麗な崖を、日々見ることができるなんて素敵です。ブロミドンの崖に感謝しています。いい気分の時・興奮している時・気分の悪い時・悲しい時・嬉しい時・疲れた時・緊張している時・ピリピリしている時など、どんな時でもブロミドンの崖を見るとリフレッシュします。
先住民のミグマの方たちの文化には、グルースキャップという名の巨人の伝説があります。この男の伝説の看板を写真に撮り、書きおこして日本語に訳し、グルースキャップとノバスコシア州の切り絵を作りました。美しい伝説をお楽しみください。
“The Story of Kluscap”『グルースキャップの物語』
Kluscap (Glooscap) was born of three bolts of lightning when the animals, fish, and plants were the only ones to roam the earth. A first bolt of lightning struck the sands of Blomidon creating the image of a giant in the sand. The head of Kluscap faced east, the direction of the rising sun. The feet of Kluscap faced west, the direction of the setting sun. His right hand pointed north and his left to the south.
地球に動物、魚、植物だけが存在していた時、グルースキャップは３つの稲妻から生まれました。１つめの稲妻がブロミドンの崖の砂の上に落ち、その砂の上に巨人の姿を創り出しました。グルースキャップの顔は、陽がのぼる東向きで、グルースキャップの足は、日が沈む西向きでした。右手は北を指し、左手は南を指していました。

A second bolt of lightning struck the sands of Blomidon, giving life to Kluscap but he still could not move. For a very long time, Kluscap lay in the sand watching Naku’set (the sun) travel across the sky each day and Tepkun’set (the moon) travel across the sky each night. He watched as the birds flew overhead, he watched as the plants and trees grew and died with the seasons and he watched as the animals wandered the earth.
２つめの稲妻がブロミドンの崖の砂の上に落ちた時、グルースキャップは命を与えられましたが、まだ動くことができませんでした。長い間、グルースキャップは砂に横たわり、Naku’set（太陽）が空を旅するのを毎日観察し、Tepkun’set（月）が空を旅するのを毎晩観察しました。グルースキャップは頭上を飛び回る鳥を観察し、季節ごとに植物や木が育ち枯れるのを観察し、地球を歩き回る動物たちを観察しました。
After many years of watching the world, a third bolt of lightning struck the sand, freeing Kluscap to wander the earth as he had watched the animals do for so long. Kluscap always understood the importance of the seven directions so before setting off he lit the sacred fire to honour the Seven Directions. He first gave thanks to the sky where Naku’set and Tepkun’set watched, to the earth for the sand that created him, to the east, west, north, and south and finally to the spirit within himself.
長年世界を観察したのち、３つめの稲妻が砂に落ち、グルースキャップは自由の身となって、ずっと見てきた動物たちのように、地球を歩き回ることができるようになりました。グルースキャップは、７方角が重要だということを常に理解していたので、７方角に敬意をはらうため、出発前に神聖な火をおこしました。まず、Naku’set（太陽）とTepkun’set（月）を見た空に、それから彼を創造した砂に、それから東に、西に、北に、南に、最後に彼の中にあるスピリットに感謝の意を示しました。
Blomidon Cliffs ブロミドンの崖
After honouring the Seven Directions Kluscap watched as seven sparks flew from the Sacred Fire traveling across the night sky. Landing on the earth and creating the seven districts of Mi’kma’ki. Again, Kluscap watched as more sparks flew from the sacred fire. From these sparks, the Mi’kmaq were created.
7方角に敬意をはらうと、グルースキャップは、神聖なる炎から７つの火花が飛び立ち夜空を旅するのを目撃しました。その火花は地球に降りてきて、ミグマギの7地方を創造しました。グルースキャップは、神聖な炎からさらに飛び立つ火花を見ました。この火花からミグマの人々が創造されたのです。
Kluscap then set off to discover Turtle Island and embark on many great adventures. He traveled first in the direction of the setting sun until he came to an ocean. He then traveled south until the land narrowed and he could see two oceans. He then traveled north to the land of snow and ice. Finally, Kluscap traveled east, to the land of the dawn, where he was created. The Mi’kmaq believe that he rests here still, overlooking Mi’kma’ki.
その後、タートルアイランドを発見しあらゆる大冒険に乗り出すために、グルースキャップは旅立ちました。まず、海にたどり着くまで、夕日が沈む方角に向かって旅をしました。そして、土地が狭くなり２つの海が見えるまで、南に向かって旅をしました。そして、雪と氷の土地である北に向かって旅をしました。最終的に、自分が創造された場所、夜明けの土地である東へと向かって旅をしました。ミグマの人々は、ミグマギを見渡せるその場所に、グルースキャップが今もいると信じています。
